The holidays are best enjoyed with union-madeΒ cookies, cakes and desserts! BCTGM Local 24 (SanΒ Francisco) represents union bakers at numerousΒ specialty bakeries renowned for scratch madeΒ breads, cookies, cakes and pastries.

San Francisco’s Boudin Bakeries hasΒ produced sourdough bread since 1849.Β Since apprenticing withΒ former Boudin ownerΒ β€œPapa Steve” GiraudoΒ at 17, Master Baker andΒ BCTGM Local 24 memberΒ 4x6_Fernando_1972
Fernando Padilla hasΒ lovingly preserved Boudin’sΒ breadmaking traditions.Β On his role in continuingΒ the Boudin legacy,Β Fernando says: β€œLike PapaΒ Steve, I’m just anotherΒ baker.” The modest and talented Fernando leads aΒ team of 20 bakers at the 10th Avenue bakery andΒ 18 bakers at Boudin’s flagship location at the SanΒ Francisco Wharf.

Peter’s Bakery is the oldest family-ownedΒ bakery in the Silicon Valley. The bakery wasΒ founded in 1936 by Tony Peters and is still operatedΒ by the Peters family. BCTGM bakers make SanΒ Jose’s local specialty: Burnt Almond Cake. UnionΒ bakers also produce strawberry tarts, chocolateΒ eclairs, hot cross buns and more fresh baked goodsβ€”Β but the bakery is renowned for the Burnt AlmondΒ Cakes which it has produced for more than 70 years.

Dick’s Bakery in San Jose is also a familyΒ bakery best known for its Burnt Almond Cakes.Β In fact, locals say there is a big cake rivalry betweenΒ Dick’s Bakery and Peter’s Bakery (Dick, the originalΒ bakery owner, bought the bakery from his cousin, TonyΒ Peters, in 1947 after returning home from World WarΒ II.) Local 24 members also create cupcakes, specialtyΒ cakes, cookies, pies, Danish and sweet breads.

Dianda’s Italian American Pastry in SanΒ Francisco is renowned for its St. HonoreΒ cakes, Panettone, leche cakes, elaborateΒ wedding cakes,Β almond torte, andΒ more than 20 differentΒ Italian pastries andΒ 35 breadpaintdifferent kindsΒ of cookies. All of theΒ bakery’s products areΒ handmade by Local 24Β (San Francisco) members,Β using recipes passedΒ down from generations ofΒ bakers.
