4 Ways to Support the #CornNutsStrike

Forty BCTGM members of Local 85 have gone on STRIKE at Corn Nuts in Fresno, Calif. (owned by Hormel)

“We are on strike at Corn Nuts because company is not bargaining in good faith. The company is reluctant to reach an agreement, is surface bargaining and changing the terms and conditions of the workers’ medical plan without notifying the employees or bargaining with the union before making these drastic changes.”

Local 85 Financial Secretary Jerry Gil

This is an Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) Strike (to protest an unfair labor practice committed by their employer); as the company changed the working conditions when Hormel bought the plant from Kraft Hines. When the purchase became final in June 2021, Hormel imposed a new medical plan without notifying the workers or bargaining with the union.

The terms they put into place in 2021 changed again in 2022. The medical plan changed, which increased the workers contribution, again without notifying the workers or the union. On January 1, 2022 the new medical coverage changes meant increased deductions from the workers’ paychecks, higher deductibles and increased the max out of pocket expenses.

Here are FOUR ways you can help BCTGM Local 85 HOLD THE LINE:

1) Join the picket line or drop off food/drinks/supplies.

Workers have a picket set up outside the main gate of their workplace:

4343 E Florence Avenue, Fresno, Calif. 93725

2) Send a solidarity letter.

Email letters of encouragement directly to the strikeline organizer, Jerry Gil, so he can share them with the workers: JerryGil85@yahoo.com

3) Donate to their Strike Fund

The Strike Fund is helping workers meet basic needs and supply their strike line so they can remain steadfast in their mission for a fair contract.
