On The Road With Local 6: The Grand Finale

“This day was an extraordinary show of union solidarity and we are very grateful to the BCTGM International Union. From the arrival of the trucks to the last car of union workers who were so thankful to receive these products – it was indeed, a very good day.”

– New Jersey State AFL-CIO Pres. Charles Wowkanech

An hour before the planned drive-thru Operation Feed Atlantic City food distribution at Bader Field for out-of-work casino employees was set to open, the line of waiting vehicles was seven rows deep, snaking around the former air field. BCTGM Local 6 President Hank McKay said he estimated the cars were lined up two miles.

All of the BCTGM made products combined filled the equivalent of FIVE tractor trailers to capacity. By noon today, more than half of the products had been given out to Atlantic City’s union families, with hundreds of vehicles still lined up.

The COVIDโ€“19 pandemic is hitting hospitality workers especially hard as the industry shuts down and businesses lay off almost their entire workforce.

“As workers struggle to provide for their families, BCTGM is doing what we can do to provide products made by our members to help.”

On March 16, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy ordered Atlantic Cityโ€™s nine casinos to close. There is little indication as to how long the current situation will last or when furloughed employees may be able to return.

The casinos have furloughed almost all their 26,450 employees. More than 10,000 of those, including cleaners, cooks, bartenders, bellmen, food and beverage servers, bussers, and dishwashers, are represented by Unite Here Local 54.

The team of 10 BCTGM Local 6 members and volunteers gathered around New Jersey State AFL-CIO Pres. Charles Wowkanech after Operation Feed Atlantic City ended at 2:00 this afternoon for a recap.

“It is a sad world we are living in with so many thousands of workers hurting. But today, we ended the day with a smile, aching backs and hearts full of love for this great union! These products made by BCTGM members were given to our fellow union brothers and sisters. You can’t help but smile and be filled with pride.”

– Local 6 President Hank McKay

The BCTGM International Union thanks BCTGM-contracted companies BIMBO Bakeries USA, Kellogg’s and Tastykake for their generous donations and help in getting the union products to workers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
