Local 22 Delivers Donated BCTGM Products to Food Pantries in Minneapolis

No one should go hungry during the COVID-19 pandemic. But the sad truth is, union families are hurting. With school closures, job losses, and health risks, millions of working families are turning to community food banks for much-needed support.

Recognizing the dire situation within their own community, BCTGM Local 22 (Minneapolis) sprang into action to help working families in the Twin Cities area.

Local 22 officers solicited product donations from numerous BCTGM employers. The following generous donations were provided: Old Dutch Potato Chips, Roseville, Minn. donated 16 cases, equaling 96 boxes of potato chips; Happyโ€™s Potato Chips, Roseville, Minn. donated 6 cases, equaling 192 Individual serving size bags of popcorn and onion ring crisps; BIMBO Bakeries USA, Roseville, Minn. donated 96 two-pound loaves of bread, 120 packages of hot dog and hamburger buns; Dakota Growers Pasta, New Hope Minn. Provided more than 1,000 pounds of individually packaged spaghetti and egg noodles.

Working with the Saint Paul Regional Labor Federation and the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, Local 22 identified food pantries with a longstanding commitment to helping unions.

On Friday, May 15 and Monday, May 18, Local 22 President Wally Borgan, Vice-President Matt Ryder and Financial Secretary-Treasurer James Rutten used personal vehicles to pick up the BCTGM-made goods from each location and deliver them to the Salvation Army of Saint Paul, the Neighborhood House of Saint Paul, Waite House of Minneapolis, Catholic Charities of Saint Paul and the UNITE HERE Local 17 Food Drive in Minneapolis.

โ€œIt was a great pleasure for us to be able to get these products to those in need,โ€ notes Borgan. โ€œIt is our hope that many working families will enjoy these products knowing they were made by our hard-working Union Members. Our thanks also to the employers who stepped up and filled our trucks for those in need,โ€ concludes Borgan.
