Worker Solidarity is Key to Victory

Workers at Sara Lee Kern's Bakery, in London, Kentucky, know the true meaning of solidarity.

Despite a vicious anti-union campaign waged by local plant management on behalf of Earthgrains, and later Sara Lee, the workers at this plant succeeded in forming a union. Their ultimate success is tied to their ability to remain united in the quest for dignity, justice and respect.

It is this same spirit of solidarity that is pushing workers at Sara Lee plants in Vernon and Redding, California, to fight for union representation. Sara Lee is resisting its California workers’ attempts to unionize with the same viciousness that it exhibited in London. As in London, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has had to intervene on numerous occasions, issuing complaints that Sara Lee has denied workers their basic labor rights under the law.

Even though Redding workers have already voted to be represented by the BCTGM, Sara Lee continues to fight the results. In Vernon, the company continues to contest the NLRB's decision that Sara Lee violated the law prior to and after a 2002 election.

What keeps both of these organizing campaigns moving forward is the solidarity within each plant, the support shown by other BCTGM members, and the NLRB's acknowledgement that Sara Lee continues to violate federal labor laws.
