The Solidarity that Defines BCTGM Local 22

The Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of solidarity is “unity (as of a group or class) that produces or is based on community of interests, objectives, and standards.” With the BCTGM, this is always the case, and our Local Unions exemplify the true meaning of solidarity through their actions.

Jerry’s Broadway Bakery Local 22 (Minneapolis) Shop Steward Matt Hamada reached out to Local 22 President Wally Borgan with news that members led a bakery-wide effort to collect money for the Local 390G (Memphis) Toy Drive to benefit the children of striking members at International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF) in Memphis, Tenn.

In total, the union members raised $250.55 for the toy drive and together with a letter and a card signed by the members at the Broadway Bakery, it was sent directly to the Local.
This isn’t the first act of solidarity by the Local 22 members at Broadway Bakery. According to Local 22 President Wally Borgan, this same group has been the driving force behind two other collections for the striking Local 390G members in Memphis, the last of which was done at the Local 22 summer picnic.

Additionally, during the nationwide strike by UAW members against the big three automakers this fall, four Broadway Bakery members traveled with Borgan from Minneapolis to Hudson, Wis. to walk the picket line and rally outside the UAW General Motors Parts Distribution Center!

“This group is very special and inspiring. I am so proud to call them Local 22-ers!,” says Borgan.
