Nabisco Local 358 Joins AFL-CIO President Shuler at the National Press Club

BCTGM Local 358 President Keith Bragg and Financial Secretary/Business Agent Darlene Carpenter joined AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, October 13.

As she began her address, Shuler introduced her invited guests, who included the Local 358 officers. She commended Nabisco workers for their victory as she introduced Carpenter and Bragg she said, โ€œThe bakery workers of Local in Richmond, Virginia who took on Nabisco and won!

โ€œMore than a thousand workers went on strike at Nabisco’s bakeries and distribution Centers. Nabisco and its parent company Mondelez had threatened to ship good union jobs
overseas, Iโ€™m sorry to Mexico, if the workers didn’t agree to major concessions despite record corporate profits.

โ€œThese are the workers who made the snacks that got us through lockdown during the pandemic. Okay Ritz crackers, Oreos, for some of us double stuffed Oreos! I had the privilege of walking the picket line with Keith and Darlene and the other union members in Richmond.

โ€œThe company tried to pit workers against each other by offering a two-tiered health care system that weakened coverage for new hires and the answer from the union was a resounding NO!

Shuler also mentioned workers around the country on strike for โ€œa better deal and a better lifeโ€ including Kellogg workers โ€œriding the momentum of their compatriots from Nabiscoโ€ฆโ€

โ€œEssential workers are tired of being thanked one day and then treated as expendable the next day!โ€

Check out what else President Shuler had to say about the Nabisco strike and union workers around the country striking for a better life:
