President Shelton Witnesses Solidarity in Action in Chicago

The determination and solidarity of striking members of Local 1 at the Nabisco Chicago bakery and the distribution center in Addison, Ill. remain unwavering, according to International President Anthony Shelton who spent the afternoon on the picket lines..

“The strength of every striking Nabisco worker makes me proud – and should make every member of this union proud,” says President Shelton. “They are fighting a historic fight, not just for their own future – but for the future of every member of this union. They deserve every bit of our respect and solidarity.”

Local 1 member April Flowers-Lewis, a utility operator who has worked at the bakery for 27 years says solidarity among the union members and the community on the strike line has been amazing. “My grandmother retired from Nabisco. They had a strike that only lasted a day or so in her day. So, it’s not totally unfamiliar. But it’s an amazing experience. I’ve never been on strike before. It’s new to all of us but we’re all out here supporting each other. We have shifts set up so the line stays strong twenty-four hours a day. We don’t leave our shift until the next shift is strong. I brought my daughter to the picket line, too, so she can understand the fight herself,” said Flowers-Lewis.
