L.42 Holds Operation Feed Hartwell COVID-19 Community Relief

More than 300 families in Hartwell, Ga. are able to feed their families union-made goods thanks to a Local 42 (Atlanta) led COVID-19 community relief effort.

Together with Impact Church of Hartwell, the local union wanted to reach members of the community who have been negatively affected by the pandemic.

Local 42 represents the maintenance workers at the nearby Nestlรฉ Purina plant. Several workers from the plant volunteered to help distribute the food to hundreds of waiting families.

International Business Agent/Organizer Darrell Copeland and Local 42 Business Manager David Cooper were joined by International Secretary-Treasurer David Woods and International Representative Jason Davis distributed fliers outside the Nestlรฉ Purina plant to help spread the word of the Local 42 food relief effort.

According to Copeland, the food relief effort was made possible thanks to generous donations by union companies and organizations including: BCTGM 252G-represented Kellogg plant provided 824 boxes of cereal;

BIMBO bakery in Decatur Ga. donated 300 loaves of buns/ bread; Bimbo in Gastonia N.C. donated 300 loaves of bread; Nabisco/Mondelez donated cookies and crackers; Kroger Bakery donated 400 loaves of bread and buns; Kroger corporate office donated cloth shopping bags; Great Fortress Church in Atlanta donated gift cards and food items; Atlanta AFL-CIO donated frozen whole chickens, mac-and-cheese, oatmeal, and more; Local 42 members at Treehouse bakery donated non-perishable canned goods; Country Homes Bakers donated baked gourmet cookies; Golden State Food in Conyers Ga. paid for the rental truck used to collect the donations.

Hundreds of food bags, containing approximately 5 to 10 pounds food items, were assembled by union volunteers the day prior to the event. Each family received several days worth of food.

โ€œIt wonโ€™t change lives, but hopefully it will help for a little bit,โ€ Copeland said.
