27 May On the Road with Local 6 Day TWO: Philadelphia AFL-CIO
The BCTGM Local 6 trucks filled to the top with union-made Kellogg and BIMBO Bakeries USA products made their way to the Philadelphia AFL-CIO this morning where they dropped off product for the Philadelphia Joint Board, Workers United Food Distribution Site.
Established October 20, 1920, the Philadelphia Joint Board, of Workers United, SEIU, is a union now comprised largely of food service workers and laundry workers in Philadelphia and New Jersey. The Philadelphia Joint Board represents workers at approximately 15 university cafeteria and conference centers, and 10 industrial laundries in Philadelphia and New Jersey. In addition to food service and laundry workers, the Philadelphia Joint Board represents bartenders and retail workers at the Philadelphia International Airport, as well as many clothing workers and manufacturing and textile workers in and around Philadelphia
A team of BCTGM Local 6 members unloaded pallets of Kellogg’s cereals, Pop-Tarts, Nutri-Grain bars, and BIMBO Bakeries USA products made by union members in Piston, Reading and Lehigh Valley, Pa.
Shouting a greeting to Local 6 President Hank McKay from the building’s second-story window, Philadelphia AFL-CIO President Pat Eiding thanked the BCTGM for helping feed Philadelphia’s union families. “The BCTGM always comes through. This is a really tough time for this city’s union workers. Thank you BCTGM International President Anthony Shelton. These union products will help put bread on the tables of working families and for that we thank you all.”
Led by Local 6 President McKay, the BCTGM team included Local 6 Financial Secretary-Treasurer Edgar Rodriguez, Business Agent/Organizer Danny Melendez, Local 6 members Corey Walter, Wilfredo Rodriguez and union family volunteers Henny McKay, Darren McKay and Darren McKay Jr.
