On the Road with Local 6 Day TWO: Final Product Collection and Union Connections

The BCTGM Food Relief caravan departed the Philadelphia AFL-CIO early this afternoon and headed across town to the Tastykake bakery where members of BCTGM Local 492 make snack cakes. Upon arrival, union members helped load five pallets of Tastykake.

The trucks next headed to Mays Landing, N.J. to the BIMBO Bakeries USA depot to refill the trucks with additional products donated by the company.

“BIMBO Bakeries has been just amazing. They have always been a good company, but the way they have stepped forward to provide food to help struggling Americans during this pandemic is extraordinary. We have every kind of product produced by our members filling these trucks to the top. If our members produce it – we got it. And we are bringing it to those who need it most.”

Hank McKay, Local 6 President

At the BIMBO depot, the team loaded 40 skids of additional BIMBO products. According to McKay, each skid weighs approximately 800 pounds. Products donated by the company include every type of bread and bun, Entenmann’s products of every variety, Barcel snack chips and much more. Additionally, BIMBO Bakeries donated a third truck filled with products to accompany the BCTGM Food Relief convoy to Atlantic City.

“How do we feel after two long days of driving, loading union products, unloading union products? It is very satisfying. Look, we are very fortunate to be union workers with a job to go to every day. These BCTGM made products will be given out to union folks just like us but who are experiencing the loss of their jobs. It is amazing that we have companies like Kellogg and BIMBO that are our partners in this effort to help workers. There is no way to describe the opportunity we have been given. We are just happy to be able to help other working families,” says McKay.

What’s up next for Hank and the Local 6 team? Atlantic City, N.J. for Operation Feed Atlantic City.

The BCTGM Food Relief journey concludes with the delivery of the contents of all three product-filled trucks. Tomorrow, hundreds of union volunteers will gather at Bader Field in Atlantic City to distribute emergency food kits to fellow union brothers and sisters, as well as members of the greater Atlantic City community, who have been hit hard by the casino industry shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

For tonight, this hardworking, dedicated crew will rest up to prepare for the final leg of the BCTGM Food Relief journey.
