16 May BCTGM Applauds Passage of the HEROES Act – Senate Needs to Act NOW
The BCTGM commends the passage of H.R. 6800, the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act.
The legislation included an effective, comprehensive solution to the multiemployer pension funding crisis that would provide long-term solvency for pension funds, including the B&C Fund, with no cuts in benefits for participants. The BCTGM was actively involved in the effort to get this proposal included in the legislation, working closely with the AFL-CIO and other affiliates. The battle now turns to the Senate.
The HEROES Act also includes an emergency workplace infectious disease standard; gives aid for state and local governments, public schools, the U.S. Postal Service, and pension funding relief; keeps workers on payrolls to avoid mass layoffs; extends unemployment insurance; provides more direct payments to working people; extends health care coverage; provides housing and food benefits; and much more.
The COVID-19 pandemic is the greatest public health threat of our lifetime and has resulted in the most serious economic catastrophe since the Great Depression. More than 85,000 people have died, and now as many as 50 million people have lost their jobs in the past two months and over 12 million people have lost their health care.
The HEROES provides a framework for helping employers keep workers on payroll, and it extends unemployment benefits through the end of the year, including extra money per week for those who are out of work through no fault of their own. It includes more direct payments to working people. It ensures free treatment for health care related to COVID-19. It earmarks billions of dollars to protect our elections. And it provides relief for renters and homeowners and additional food assistance.
Working people are desperate for our leaders to put partisanship aside and do what is right for our health, our economy and our country. The HEROES Act is a major step forward.
