15 Jan BCTGM Joins Postal Workers Solidarity Protest Outside Canadian Embassy
BCTGM International Secretary Treasurer Steve Bertelli, Assistant to the International President Harry Kaiser and Director of Research & Education Matthew Clark were among U.S. postal workers and supporters who rallied outside the Canadian embassy in Washington D.C. today to protest the Canadian Liberal governmentโs decision to legislate Canadian Postal Workers back to work.
The rally, led by Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union and the National Association of Letter Carriers, was organized as a show of solidarity with Canada Post workers.
Ottawa passed legislation last November that forced striking postal workers to return to work and resume their duties, and a mediator was appointed to arbitrate an end to the Crown Corporationโs dispute with members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. Those efforts broke down in December.
The arbitration process is aimed at reaching settlements that would be imposed on Canada Post and its 42,000 urban carriers and 8,000 rural and suburban employees.
During last yearโs rotating walkouts, Canada Post requested that its foreign partners halt deliveries to Canada while job action was underway.
