26 Jul Intl. Pres. Durkee Meets with House and Senate Members on Pension Funding Crisis

Following the massive “Protect Our Pensions” rally outside the Ohio State House in Columbus, Ohio last week, BCTGM International President is on Capitol Hill this week meeting with House and Senate members and key staff on the Pension funding issue.
BCTGM Local 6 (Philadelphia) President/Business Agent Hank McKay and union member Danny Melendez accompanied President Durkee. Melendez, who works at the Bimbo Bakeries USA plant in Lehigh Valley, Pa., was invited to attend a round table discussion with Members of the House of Representatives on the multiemployer pension funding crisis.ย Melendez explained why active members are fighting for the legislation that will secure the benefits of retirees and those who are working hard and earning pension credits so that they can retiree in dignity.
Assistant to the International President Harry Kaiser joined President Durkee, McKay and Melendez in discussions withย U. S. Senator Bob Caseyย Casey (D-Pa.) and Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) (pictured above with the BCTGM group on Capital Hill).
President Durkee explained the BCTGM’s position on the multiemployer pension funding crisis and the need for an effective legislative solution that includes long-term, low-interest loans to Funds like the B&C Fund.
โIt is vital that Congress address this countryโs growing pension plan funding crisisโ a crisis that threatens the retirement security of hardworking Americans who have made sacrifices in order to maintain the benefits that will help sustain them in their retirement years. There is so much at stake for millions of working families and retirees,โ said Durkee.
Danny Melendez appeared as a witness at a round table discussion with Members of the House of Representatives on the multi employer pension funding crisis. Brother Melendez explained why active members are fighting for the legislation that will secure the benefits of retirees and those who are working hard and earning pension credits so that they can retiree in dignity.
In addition, President Durkee was asked by AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka to serve on the newly-formed AFL-CIO Commission on the Future of Work and Unions. Durkee attended a series of Commission meetings this week as well as the AFL-CIO Executive Council.
In addition to the Congressional visits, McKay and Melendez accompanied President Durkee to some of the scheduled meetings in Washington.
