IN MEMORIAM: CAROLYN JACOBSON

“Activist, unionist, educator and hell raiser, we give thanks for the spirit, intelligence and passion Carolyn brought to everything she put her hand to. Like our foremothers Mother Jones, Olga Madar and Sojourner Truth, Her spirit marches on!”

– Elise Bryant, President, Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW)

Carolyn Jacobson, longtime director of the International Union’s Public Relations Department and a lifelong activist, died on March 23 after a courageous, two-year fight with cancer. She was 67 years old.

Following her retirement from the International Union, Jacobson went on to create the Contraceptive Equity program and the Cervical Cancer Prevention program for union women, as projects of the CLUW Foundation. She was a founder and permanent member of the Board of the Berger Marks Foundation which supported union womens’ leadership development and women as organizers.  Renowned for her role in mentoring union women and advocating for womens’ health issues, Carolyn authored, The Next Generation: A Handbook for Mentoring Future Union Leaders.

On March 26, a funeral service was held for her at Adas Israel synagogue in Washington D.C.

Additional information on where to send condolences can be found on the CLUW site.
