Global Unions Call for ILO Convention on Gender-Based Workplace Violence

There can be no fair and equal workplaces if there is violence. Yet there is still no law at the international level that sets a baseline for taking action to eradicate violence and harassment in the workplace.

According to the International Labour Conference (ILC), gender-based violence remains one of the most common and tolerated human rights abuses.  According to statistics, 35% of women – 818 million women globally – over the age of 15 have experienced sexual or physical violence at home, in their communities or in the workplace.

In June 2018, the International Labour Oorganization (ILO) Conference will discuss the development of international labour standard on violence against women and men at work, and the trade union movement is calling for a strong international convention to be adopted.

At the 27th IUF World Conference in September, delegates from 90 countries around the world collectively pledged to halt violence against women and unanimously adopted a resolution calling for an ILO Convention to address gender-based violence at the workplace. The BCTGM delegation to the 27 World Congress, strongly advocated passage of the resolution on stopping violence against women in the workplace.

The IUF fully endorses the campaign for an ILO Convention launched by the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC). The ITUC and its affiliated organizations work together to advance women’s rights and gender equality. The ITUC actively promotes equality at the workplace and the full integration of women in trade unions including in their decision making bodies.

The ITUC campaign aims to:

  • Build critical support for the adoption of an ILO Convention, accompanied by a Recommendation, on “Violence and Harassment against Women and Men in the World of Work”, with a strong focus on the gender dimension of violence; and
  • Mobilize and strengthen trade union action in eradicating gender-based violence from the world of work.
