BCTGM Locals, Labor Allies Coast to Coast Educate Thousands of Consumers on Check the Label Campaign

“As long as Nabisco/Mondelez continues to outsource good, middle-class jobs and exploit working families across the globe – the BCTGM will be relentless in our efforts to expose the company’s destructive business model and expand the boycott of Nabisco products made in Mexico. Today was a strong testament to the solidarity and resolve of the BCTGM,” reflected BCTGM International President David Durkee on the November 16 Big Box Store National Day of Action.

From Oregon, California and Texas, to Iowa, Georgia, Virginia, Washington D.C. and many states in between, BCTGM was joined outside the nation’s largest retailers by activists from dozens of other AFL-CIO affiliated unions. Scores of trade unionists distributed literature, met with store managers, held rallies and talked with customers outside big box stores like Wal-Mart, Target, Costco, B.J.’s, Sam’s Club and more.

In Portland, Ore., BCTGM Local 114 members were joined by the Oregon State AFL-CIO and many other union members rallied and handed out Check the Label cards outside a Walmart location.

“It was an amazing day of solidarity and education,” said BCTGM Local 114 Secretary-Treasurer and GEB member Terry Lansing. “We had the opportunity to talk one-on-one with folks about the products our members make and why it is important to sustain good, middle-class jobs in America. Most people were shocked to hear that the same Nabisco products we produce – and their families love – are no longer made in America. They were happy to be given information about how to check the label on products,” Lansing said.

In the Philadelphia area, BCTGM International Director of Organization John Price led five groups of Local 6 stewards who handed out check the label cards to customers and talked with store managers at eight big box stores. The stewards, who gathered in Philadelphia for a training, came from numerous union shops from Bethlehem to Philadelphia and cities in between. Price was joined by UFCW Region 2 Vice President Al Vincent and UFCW members from throughout the region.

“I’m proud of our shop stewards and union members who understand the true meaning of solidarity and showed it yesterday by getting the message out to thousands of consumers – do not buy Nabisco products made in Mexico. Check the label!” said BCTGM Local 6 President Hank McKay.

At the end of the day, thousands of customers shopping at more than 100 big box stores across the U.S. were educated on how to Check the Label on Nabisco products BOYCOTT Nabisco snacks like Oreo, Ritz Crackers, Graham Crackers, and Chips Ahoy that are made in Mexico.
