BCTGM Intl. Represents and Wins at ILCA Convention

St. Louis, Mo. — Corrina Christensen, Director of Communications & Public Relations, and Michelle Ellis, Director of New Media & Graphic Arts, are representing the BCTGM International Union this week at the 2017 International Labor Communications Association (ILCA) Convention.

The Convention began with a plenary panel, “Confronting Right-to-Work and Building a Workers’ Movement” that was moderated by AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. Panel participants included MaryBe McMillan, President of the North Carolina AFL-CIO, Nora Loreto, Canadian Association of Labour Media, David Cook, President of UFCW Local 655 (St. Louis) and Megan Parke, AFSCME Council 28 (Washington).

President Trumka reminded the communicators, “Workers never get more by going it alone….they get more by joining together for collective action. We will not settle for merely surviving as a labor movement – we must thrive and grow because of these struggles.”

Reflecting on the struggles of being trade unionist in a Right-to-Work state like North Carolina, MaryBe told delegates, “My state has been a right-to-work state for more than 70 years. Getting workers to join a union is always a struggle. But we must communicate constantly– there is power in the union. Fair pay for an honest days work is NOT a radical idea! It is our right to ask for better!”

The 2017 ILCA Labor Media Awards were presented during a special Convention luncheon. The BCTGM International was awarded the following acclaimed awards in Labor Journalism and Media:
