Senator Sherrod Brown: A Workers’ Champion Takes Action on Trade

Brown-062609-18446- 0008

On May 1, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) sent a letter to President Donald Trump outlining a four-point plan for securing the best deal for American workers as the administration prepares to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Brown, a true friend of labor and working families, has strongly opposed unfair trade deals for many years. Brown, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over trade deals, has been in close contact with the Trump Administration on the plan to renegotiate the flawed trade deal. Senator Brown’s plan focuses on four key points in rewriting NAFTA:
  1. Secure Anti-Outsourcing and Buy America Provisions Up Front
  2. Donโ€™t Pit American Workers and Industries against Each Other in Negotiationsย
  3. Build Enforcement Tools that Favor American Workers, Not Foreign Corporations if the Deal is Violated
  4. Include Workers in the Negotiations

โ€œAmerican jobs shouldnโ€™t be up for negotiation and American workers canโ€™t be traded away as bargaining chips,โ€ Brown said. โ€œBy setting high standards, putting workers ahead of corporations and refusing to compromise on outsourcing, we can create the best possible deal for all American workers.โ€
