24 Mar Millions Join BCTGM’s Digital Day of Action
Millions of union members and activists around the globe joined together yesterday to mark the one year anniversary of the 600 layoffs of BCTGM Local 300 members from the Mondelēz/Nabisco Chicago bakery.
The BCTGM’s Digital Day of Action received the full support of the AFL-CIO and its 55 affiliated Unions. From teachers (AFT), Nurses (NNU), Seafarers (SIU and MTD), Office Professionals (OPEIU) and Postal Workers (APWU), to Communications Workers (CWA), Auto Workers (UAW), Machinists (IAM), Electrical Workers (IBEW), Government Workers (AFSCME and AFGE), Theater and Stage Workers (IATSE) and many other unions and members shared the Mondelēz/Nabisco video throughout social media.
The Digital Day of Action did not end with the involvement of the American labor movement. Mondelēz workers at locations around the world (IUF) also participated in the social media solidarity. Additionally, allied organizations including Jobs with Justice, United Students Against Sweatshops, Public Citizen Global Trade Watch, The Fight for $15 and others were vital in spreading news of the campaign by sharing the video on social media sites.
By the end of the day, our video posts and tweets with the hashtag #nabiscoRAAGE were viewed nearly 4.2 MILLION times!!
This collective act of solidarity not only paid tribute to the Nabisco 600 workers, it helped call attention to the corporate motive behind the actions of Mondelēz International. On March 23rd, 2017, the BCTGM was joined by millions to proclaim: America’s workers refuse to accept the outsourcing of jobs and will not back down from corporations that divide workers, destroy communities and diminish the living standards of millions.
The short-form documentary “Made in America,” a Front Page production hosted by James Earl Jones, will air on PBS stations across the nation later this spring.
