23 Mar An Anniversary We Won’t Soon Forget
“Today’s layoff of the first 277 employees from the Nabisco Chicago Bakery should not be seen as the end of the Union’s fight to save these American jobs, but rather the launch of an intensified effort to educate the American consumer on the transfer of this work from the hard working employees of Chicago to low wage jobs at Nabisco’s production facility in Salinas, Mexico.”
– BCTGM International President David Durkee; March 23, 2016
Today, March 23rd, marks one year since Mondelēz/Nabisco began laying off union workers from the Chicago Nabisco bakery and outsourcing the production jobs to Salinas, Mexico. On this day a year ago, President Durkee pledged an intensified fight for the Chicago bakery. Throughout the last year, the BCTGM has gained tremendous support for the campaign from the labor movement, progressive communities, academia and allies around the world. The coalition of solidarity for the Nabisco 600 workers is stronger than ever and continues to grow.
We are asking you to help us recognize the one year anniversary of the Chicago layoffs by participating in today’s DIGITAL DAY OF ACTION. The day will focus on the social media release of a one-minute video promotion of a new documentary about the Chicago Mondelēz/Nabisco workers that is being produced by Front Page, a PBS show narrated by James Earl Jones. The short documentary will air later this spring on PBS stations.
Please share this video widely on Facebook and Twitter. Our collective act of solidarity will honor these Nabisco workers while reminding Mondelēz International that we will not back down from a global corporation that divides workers, destroys communities and diminishes the living standards for millions.
