09 Mar BCTGM Marks Intl. Women’s Day in Washington D.C.
Women around the world marked International Women’s Day on Wednesday, with many wearing red to work and others taking the day off from work to join rallies, demonstrations, marches and other special events. The global message was one of unity calling for an end to workplace violence and harassment, pay equity, one fair living wage and labor rights at work.
Part of the Washington D.C. Women Workers Rising march was BCTGM International Research & Education Director Matthew Clark, Research Specialist Paul Lechtenberg and son Wynn, Director of P.R./Communications Corrina Christensen and Director of New Media Michelle Ellis. There was a large contingent of other union women and men participating in the D.C. event including from the AFL-CIO, UFCW, IBEW, AFT, CWA, Jobs with Justice and more.
International Women’s Day, which started in the early 1900s, is an annual celebration recognizing women’s economic, political and social achievements. It also serves to highlight the ongoing struggle for gender equality worldwide.
