06 Mar BCTGM Joins “March on Mississippi” to Demand Workers’ Rights for Nissan Factory Workers
Intl. Rep. Jason Davis, Sen. Bernie Sanders, L. 149 Pres. Letitia Malone.
โIf Mississippi Nissan workers succeed, it will send a powerful message in the south and across this country that working people are prepared to fight for justice.โ
โ Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) told the Nissan factory workers.
On March 4, BCTGM International Representative Jason Davis and Local 149 (Memphis) President and GEB member Letitia Malone traveled to Canton, Miss. to join in the โMarch on Mississippiโ which included AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler, NAACP President Cornell Brooks, actor Danny Glover, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.),ย civil rights leaders, and thousands of other activists.
They marched about two miles to the Nissan vehicle assembly plant to demand that the automaker halt its anti-union campaign and let workers vote to join the UAW. The march culminated in the delivery of a letter to Nissan officials โdemanding the company halt its ongoing harassment of African-American workers who are organizing to form a union,โ stated the document written by the Mississippi Alliance for Fairness at Nissan.
โFear is the crucial element that they use in sustaining the power over workers โ fear,โ Glover told the crowd during the rally.
Sanders reminded the union crowd that itโs their job to tell corporate America that โthey canโt have it allโ and to โstart treating the working people of this country with respect and dignity.โ
Both Davis and Malone said they were inspired by the courage of the Nissan workers who stood up to speak out against Nissanโs attacks on their civil rights at the plant. โThe fight for justice is taking place by workers all across this nation. We canโt let corporations stop workers from forming a union. Like these brave Nissan men and women, everyย worker deserves fair pay, equality and respect on the job,โ said Davis.
Union activists, supporters and journalists posted photos and videos from the day of action under the hashtags #MarchonMississippi and #DoBetterNissan.
