Canadaโ€™s largest, and newest commercial bakery opened officially in Hamilton Wednesday.

The $100 million Canada Bread plant covers nearly 400,000 square feet on Nebo Road. The plant is a division of Maple Leaf Foods, and will produce a variety of products โ€“ mostly from the Dempsterโ€™s line โ€“ including breads, buns, english muffins, and tortillas.

The new plant is the anchor tenant in the recently-opened Red Hill Business Park.

After years of hearing that the city of Hamilton was not business-friendly, Maple Leaf president and CEO Michael McCain says those rumours are simply untrue.

โ€œTheyโ€™re great people, great location, great development opportunities, itโ€™s just a wonderful place to locate this facility. Weโ€™ve been very excited to be here and the local community and the infrastructure here to support us has been phenomenal.โ€

The plant is not only the largest in Canada; itโ€™s considered one of the most modern and efficient bakeries in the world. Itโ€™s also considered one of the most environmentally friendly, using new, โ€œgreen technologiesโ€ to help control heating, cooling, lighting, and wastewater.
