08 Mar AIS Hazardous Waste workers join Local 406, New Brunswick
Canadian Vice President Sean Kelly reports that BCTGM Local 406 (Moncton, New Brunswick) has successfully organized the workers at Atlantic Industrial Services (AIS), which is a Division of Enviro-Systems (ESI). AIS is located in Fredericton, New Brunswick. ESI is one of the largest handlers of hazardous waste in Atlantic Canada providing a full range of disposal options for all hazardous and regulated wastes. Our new members at AIS specialize in the removal and proper disposal of household hazardous waste items, such as batteries, paints, antifreeze, pesticides, and heavy metals. An example of a heavy metal product would be CFL light bulbs, thermostats, etc., that contain mercury. The organizing campaign was lead by Local 406 Business Agent Mark Robar.
BCTGM Local 55 (St-Leonard, Quebec) had recently organized the mechanics at Produits Alimentaries located in St-Hubert, Quebec. The production workers at Producits Alimentaries were already represented by Local 55 and the local union saw an opportunity to strengthen this bargaining unit. Producits Alimentaries produces frozen foods, soups, broths and dehydrated sauces.
The BCTGM welcomes these new Canadian members into our union family!
