Maintenance Workers at Hearthside Food Solutions File for Election to join BCTGM

On Tuesday, August 27, 2024, 22 maintenance unit workers employed at Hearthside Food Solutions (“Hearthside”) in Michigan City, Ind. filed for an election to be represented by the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union (BCTGM).

The workers at the Michigan City bakery have developed their organizing campaign in solidarity with two other Hearthside facilities in McComb, Ohio and London, Ky. In recent months, the maintenance unit workers in Michigan City grew more assured in their readiness for a Union. High on their list of issues is the loss of benefits, including a 401(k) match, and continued disrespect on the job.

“Hearthside has a long history of union-busting and violating federal labor laws,” said BCTGM International President Anthony Shelton. Referring to a related Union vote in May, he added, “the BCTGM filed 20 federal charges against the company just this year for its aggressive interference with our campaign in London, Ky.”

The BCTGM International Union continues to pressure Hearthside’s private equity owners on their accountability to the workers as part of the company’s overall success. “Partners Group and Charlesbank are directly responsible for ensuring the legal rights of Hearthside’s workers,” Shelton asserted. “This International Union has committed to fight for Hearthside workers, but we fully expect its investors to do the same.

“As always, we expect that without employer interference, we will be welcoming Hearthside maintenance workers into the BCTGM family in the near future,” Shelton concluded.
